McAllister named to chamber task force studing reopening the economy

Ward 7 Councilman Steve McAllister has been selected to represent Rhode Island as a member of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Council of State Chambers (COSC) joint task force to support and coordinate the federal and state approaches to reopening the national economy.

“There’s a lot to get done,” McAllister said Tuesday afternoon following the first conference call of the 52-member committee made up of a representative from each state plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Another meeting is scheduled for Friday and then weekly Tuesday meetings thereafter.

McAllister, who is the director of the Eastern Region for the US Chamber of Commerce, expects state representatives to talk about what is happening in their states – “what’s working and what’s not working” – as well as identify resources needed to restore the economy.

U.S. Chamber President Suzanne Clark addressed the initial task force meeting.

“Unprecedented coordination between business and government is needed to map how we can begin a gradual reopening of American businesses,” she said in a release. “It is critical that states, local governments, and business sectors learn from one another on the best ways to prudently reopen the economy — and this new task force is key to achieving that goal.”

In an effort to learn from state leaders some of the issues from a governmental perspective, McAllister said House Majority Leader K. Joseph Shekarchi has arranged for him to meet with Speaker Nicholas Mattiello this week. In addition to hearing what issues the state faces, McAllister is hopeful of providing state and municipal leaders ideas and concerns of the business community.
