Move on, not backward

To the Editor:

March 1, 2017 is the date that Mayor Scott Avedisian will close the Buttonwoods Community Center.

This is a very bad decision. Plans are to shift the card players to the Pilgrim Center, which is already overcrowded and with a parking lot that is too small for its current use. The card playing room is a firetrap.

The roof at Buttonwoods has leaked for years – poor maintenance. Install a roof and move on not backward. Buttonwoods is a wonderful building; it has everything, including a very large room with many windows and excellent fire doors.

Lack of maintenance is no excuse to close a building. The rent income has been more than enough to maintain this building. The lack of common sense should not be the reason to close Buttonwoods.

The mayor talks and writes how he loves our senior citizens. Now he is ready to give them the shaft; he did not have the courtesy to at least talk to them before making this gutless decision to close our building.

This closing, based on both personal and business reasons, is not a good idea. Please do not close the Buttonwoods Community Center. It makes no sense to have it just sit there unused and subject to rot.
