NEIT awarded Champlin Foundations grant
Dr. Thomas F. Wylie, provost and senior vice president at New England Institute of Technology (NEIT), announced that the college has received a $119,625 grant from The Champlin Foundations. The Champlin Foundations is a 77-year-old philanthropic organization with interests in education, hospitals, health care, conservation, social services and cultural groups to name a few. The grant will be used to purchase laboratory equipment for NEIT’s new Associate in Science degree program in Respiratory Care. This program is the first offering of its kind in Rhode Island in more than 25 years.
Job market studies project 1,258 job openings in the respiratory care field for 2016 within Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. As a model program, NEIT’s Respiratory Care curriculum will utilize the latest simulation technology to train students in the areas of adult, pediatric and neonatal respiratory medicine. No other active college respiratory care laboratory in New England utilizes simulation technology specifically for mechanical ventilation and cardiopulmonary assessment, which is an essential component in how colleges train therapists. Approximately 2,100 square feet of laboratory space has been dedicated to the respiratory care program at the college’s new East Greenwich campus.
According to Wylie, “The Respiratory Care laboratory will offer our students the most current equipment used in this highly-technical field. Students will be trained to work alongside physicians and nurses to treat patients of all ages with cardiopulmonary disorders and to be critical thinking members of trauma teams and intensive care units. We are very grateful to The Champlin Foundations for their continued generosity in supporting New England Tech’s mission of providing our students with a quality technical education.”
Under the leadership of President Richard I. Gouse, New England Institute of Technology is a private, non-profit technical college with an enrollment of more than 3,000 students. The college offers over 30 Associate, Bachelor and Master’s degree programs and is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc.
