New England Institute of Technology (NEIT) is the first university in Rhode Island to join Project Lead The Way (PLTW), a nonprofit organization founded in 1997.

Project Lead The Way focuses on empowering K-12 students across the U.S. by transforming the learning and teaching experience for students and teachers alike. This announcement was made by Lynn M. Fawthrop, Vice President of Enrollment Management and Marketing at NEIT.

PLTW offers comprehensive pathways in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science to high school students. Likewise, New England Tech offers academic programs that focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) careers. As a PLTW partner, New England Tech will provide advanced course credits and scholarships to eligible students enrolled in PLTW courses while in high school. New England Tech will also host teacher training and professional development experiences as do other PLTW colleges, universities and research institutions nationwide.

New England Tech, along with Project Lead The Way, challenges students to develop technical knowledge in the STEM fields as well as broaden their problem-solving,critical thinking and communication skills through real-world challenges. According to PLTW, these students are better prepared for postsecondary studies and more likely to consider STEM majors and careers. For 20 years, Project Lead The Way has engaged millions of students and tens of thousands of teachers.

Fawthrop stated, “New England Tech is proud to pave the way as Rhode Island’s first university to partner with Project Lead The Way in this most-important initiative. In addition to offering eligible students advanced course credits, we are pleased to announce that New England Tech will provide a $3,000 scholarship per year to those PLTW students who meet the established academic requirements. The NEIT community looks forward to working with these outstanding students.”
