NEIT to host 2012 Global Game Jam
New England Institute of Technology (NEIT) has been selected as an official host site for the 2012 Global Game Jam. This 48-hour game design event will be held at 220 jam sites worldwide on Jan. 27-29. While NEIT has sponsored gaming events for its students in the past, this is the first time this international event will take place in Rhode Island.
Global Game Jam will be held at New England Tech’s East Greenwich Campus, located at 1408 Division Road, beginning at 3 p.m. on Jan. 27 in the Media Presentation Theater. (The site will close from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. each day). Registration for this event is free but is limited to the first 100 pre-registered participants over 18 years of age. To register, go to globalgamejam.neit.edu. For more information on the game jam program, visit www.globalgamejam.org.
This year marks the fourth year that Global Game Jam (GGJ) has brought students, faculty, hobbyists and professionals together to team up and create complete, playable games over the course of the weekend. GGJ co-founder and 2012 director Ian Schreiber stated that in 2011, more than 1,500 games were created by over 6,500 people in 44 countries and that the level of participation has increased each year.
As Dr. Thomas F. Wylie, senior vice president and provost at NEIT, states, “New England Tech is very excited to host this worldwide gaming event. This type of competition tests the gaming knowledge of each participant while fostering team-building skills that are crucial in the gaming industry. From the novice gamer to the advanced, this event will be fun, challenging and memorable for all.”
