No. 2 Barrington knocks off top-ranked Hendricken

If the Bishop Hendricken football team wins a fourth consecutive championship, it won’t be part of an undefeated march. Barrington came into Warwick on Friday night for a No. 1 vs. No. 2 battle of unbeaten teams and left with a 7-0 victory.

The Hawks had won 10 consecutive games dating back to last year and hadn’t really been tested in Division I play this season. Their smallest margin of victory in league play was 20 points.

The Eagles, who had a won a defensive battle with La Salle the week before, managed to put the Hawks into the same kind of game. They allowed just five first downs and 164 yards of offense. Senior running back Remington Blue, who’s already a 1,000-yard rusher this season, was held to 42 yards on nine carries. The Hawks were stopped on four separate fourth-down attempts.

Barrington made the defensive effort count with a second-quarter score. Matt Rota’s touchdown pass to Samuel Vetromile made the difference.

With the win – and with both teams having just one league game left – Barrington has clinched the top seed for the Division I playoffs. The Hawks will be the No. 2 seed regardless of what happens in Friday’s league-play finale against La Salle.

Portsmouth sits in third place at 4-2 after a blowout win over East Providence. Cranston East’s victory over La Salle moved the ’Bolts and Rams into a fourth-place tie at 3-3.
