No. 2 Hawks down Raiders, cruise into semis

The Bishop Hendricken soccer team overcame an early deficit on Friday night, scoring three unanswered goals to down No. 7 Shea, 3-1, in the Division I quarterfinals.

The second-seeded Hawks were put on their heels on their home turf just six minutes into the first half when Wolfio Neto finished off a feed from Geison Silva Dacruz to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.

But Hendricken would respond.

Chukwudi Onyejose scored his first of two goals on the night before halftime to tie the score at 1 heading into the break.

Lucas Gesmundo would then give the Hawks the lead for good in the 50th minute, and Onyejose added an insurance goal two minutes later to put the game out of reach for upset-minded Shea.

Chukwuma Onyejose and Mike Fleming each added an assist, while Ryan Morel stopped four of the five shots he faced to propel the Hawks into the semifinals.

Hendricken will face No. 3 Portsmouth on Wednesday night at East Greenwich at 7:30 p.m. for a spot in the state final. The Patriots edged No. 11 Tolman, 1-0, to set the stage for a Hendricken/Portsmouth semifinal matchup.

The Hawks won their lone contest against the Patriots, 2-1, back on Oct. 5.
