Oakland Beach ice cream parlor a sweet way to beat heat by land & sea

Mayor Joseph Solomon visited Parkey’s at Fairwinds Marina in Oakland Beach on July 16 for a tasty ribbon-cutting. Parkey’s serves ice cream to people arriving by land and sea. The mayor went for a Graham Central Station cone – yes, Graham Central Station, a graham cracker and chocolate ice cream flavor served at the parlor. When asked about the taste, the mayor simply said, “Awesome.” He described the parlor as a “great place,” “clean and nice” and a place to “enjoy what’s left of summer.”

Eric Presbrey, grandson of Edgar “Parkey” Mattson, and Joe McGrady are the owners of the business, while Hayley Fraser general manager of  Fairwinds Marina and the Jamestown Marina. Presbrey and McGrady acquired the former Warwick Cove Marina and the house next to it two years ago and have since transformed the place into something that Jan Presbrey, daughter of Parkey, describes as “beautiful.” Parkey himself inspired the idea for the parlor, as he used to bring Jan Presbrey, down to the marinas to look at the boats. When acquiring the small house and lot, Eric combined his grandfather’s love of ice cream and the marinas to create a business that could serve ice cream to boaters coming in by sea

Boaters, including Manny Perry and Joann Corey, are delighted. Perry says that they use dinghies to go from place to place along the marinas to get food and boating supplies. As friends of the owners and as boaters, a sweeter, cooler trip is not one to miss. The ice cream is provided by Warwick Ice Cream, a local ice cream company that can trace its roots back to 1930. They offer some unique Rhode Island ice cream flavors, such as Del’s Lemonade and Blizzard of ’78. Parkey’s Ice Cream has an Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, which can be found online.
