The Ocean State Council of Independent Living (OSCIL) recently awarded five $1,296 scholarships to college students with disabilities. The scholarships are in memory of Catherine T. Murray, a late Warwick teacher and OSCIL volunteer who adamantly believed the power of education assists in overcoming disabilities and furthers opportunities. Catherine established the scholarship fund that was later augmented with funding from her brother, Terrence Murray. From left: Hannah Igoe, who is attending URI where she is majoring in pharmacy; Doug Wood who served on the scholarship selection committee; Ryan Fleming, a sophomore at Rhode Island College where he majors in elementary education; OSCIL director Lorna Ricci; URI student Isobel McCullough, who is pursuing a double major in film and French with a minor in music; and Courtney Cardenas, who will be attending this fall to study English and film. In the accompanying photo Lorna Ricci presents Victoria Dolby with her scholarship. She will be attending MTTI, where she would like to pursue a career as a computer technician.
