OSCIL scholarship recipients look to further their education

Posted

At the annual meeting of the Ocean State Council of Independent Living held April 26 at the Warwick Public Library, Catherine T. Murray Scholarships were awarded to five individuals planning to further their educations. The recipients all have a disability, a requirement of scholarship eligibility.

Michelle Machado, a former recipient of a scholarship now working at OSCIL offered the following comments on each of this year’s recipients:

Bridget Dwyer attends Pilgrim High School. She will begin her studies at CCRI, where she would like to pursue a career in phlebotomy. Her goal is to work at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and obtain a position with the Tomorrow Fund Clinic. In doing so, she wishes to help children undergoing cancer treatment. Bridget feels as though through this career path, she can make a difference in the lives of others.

Sabina Piorkowski is currently attending Rhode Island College. She is pursuing a double major in Computer Information Systems and Finance. Once she attains this goal, she plans to study for a Master Degree in Cyber Security. She is hopeful that this will lead to her dream of working with NASA. Sabina believes that disabilities do not define you, but rather make you a stronger person. Have fun in space, Sabina!

Lindsey Bouthiette attends Coventry High School. She is on track to attend Rochester Institute of Technology. Lindsey plans to major in International and Global Studies-a baccalaureate degree program. With this degree, she wishes to become a Humanitarian Aid Worker. She finds great satisfaction in the pursuit of this path as she will be “saving lives, relieving suffering and protecting human dignity”.

Ryan Fleming attends Lincoln High School. He was accepted to attend Rhode Island College where he will major in Secondary Education with a concentration in Math. He also enjoys coaching and believes that every moment is a teachable moment. He brings positivity to whatever he chooses to pursue. He believes in the mantra that “it takes a village to support and love our children”.

Also receiving a scholarship is Jocelyn Leo who requested that her story not be shared and was unable to attend the ceremony.
