Perfect angle

There’s a Johnston connection everywhere, and this year’s Little League World Series in Bristol, Connecticut was no different. Johnston resident Chris Colbert, who’s served as an umpire for the last 17 years at the high school level and through amateur leagues, found himself behind the plate during last Saturday’s nationally televised game. Colbert was an umpire for about ten of last week’s games, officiating as part of a crew narrowed down from 1,800 applications. He said the championship game was the most trilling part of his experience, only had a few close calls reviewed and was very pleased with his crew’s performance. A close play at the plate, which Colbert called correctly, made the highlight reel on ESPN. A printer by trade, Colbert moved to Johnston five years ago from Warwick. He was chosen for the home plate umpire position after being performance rated throughout the other games he called during the tournament. (Submitted photos)
