Phyllis H. (Gutmueller) McDevitt, age 92, formerly of Oaklawn Avenue, Cranston, passed away peacefully at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, surrounded by her loving family, on Wednesday, October 23, 2019.

Born in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late William G. and Helen (Brede) Gutmueller, she lived in Cranston for 38 years. She was a graduate of Baldwin Academy in Pennsylvania and earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Wheelock College in Boston and her master’s degree at Salve Regina University in Newport. Mrs. McDevitt was a teacher in the Warwick Public Schools for 25 years, retiring in 1990. She earlier taught at Moses Brown School in Providence for three years.

She is survived by a daughter, Laurie-Jean Ciosek and her husband, Edmond, of Cumberland; two sons, William T. McDevitt of Cranston and Joseph T. McDevitt Jr. and his wife, Maura, of Cranston; five grandchildren, Stephen Ciosek, Arianna Servant, Alexander McDevitt, Phillip Ciosek and Caleb McDevitt; and two great-grandchildren, Edelman and Teverly Servant. She was the mother of the late Peter S. McDevitt and sister of the late Norma Jean Peck.
