Pilgrim shuts out Rocky Hill in opener

The Pilgrim field hockey team defended its home field and beat Rocky Hill, 2-0, on Tuesday evening behind goals from seniors Mary Comtois and Karly Evans and an assist from sophomore Samantha McConnell.

Sophomore Sara Langevin was in net for Pilgrim with senior Lindsey Fontes out with an injury. The timetable for Fontes return is still up in the air. Taylor Cote was in net for Rocky Hill.

Pilgrim controlled most of the first half and kept the ball in the Rocky Hill zone. Midway through the half, the Pats’ Addison Murphy had a shot turned away by the Rocky Hill defense. Shortly after, though, McConnell assisted in front to Comtois, who lit the lamp with 8:31 left. When Rocky Hill did get an opportunity, Kat Conforti shot it wide.

Just before halftime, Rocky Hill was whistled for a penalty. The foul gave Pilgrim another opportunity when Murphy got a chance in front, but she was denied by Cote.

Pilgrim took command early in the second half, taking the ball right into Rocky Hill territory. June Beauregard and Victoria Tatewosian had chances, but weren’t able to punch it in. A few minutes later, Beauregard passed in front to Tatewosian for a one-timer, but that shot went wide. Soon after, though, Evans would dribble down in front and put it past Cote for an unassisted goal.

Rocky Hill had the ball in Pats’ territory late in the contest, but overall, Pilgrim controlled the game from the start.

“I think we had a few more opportunities to score, but I think Rocky Hill is good,” Pilgrim head coach Stephanie Shields said. “They’re solid, they’ve got good basics and they always get better as the year goes on. So, they’ll definitely be one to watch out for next time.”

Langevin was solid in net for Pilgrim. She didn’t see many shots, but she stopped the ones she saw.

“She had a few saves, and sometimes those are the toughest ones when you don’t see a lot of shots,” Shields said. “So, we really worked the third to make sure she stayed focused and she limited those opportunities that they had.”
