The Pilgrim softball team advanced to the double-elimination bracket Tuesday afternoon after an 11-9 comeback victory over the reigning state champion, St. Ray’s.
The Pats trailed 7-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Olivia King and Morgan Almon delivered two clutch hits. King’s two-run base hit put Pilgrim ahead, while Almon roped a double that cleared the bases to give Pilgrim an 11-7 advantage.
The Saints got two back in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough. Jeriann Evans finished the day 4-for-4 with four runs scored, while Madison Balutowski and Katrina Kazen each went 3-for-4. Balutowski scored three times and Kazen drove in three runs.
After a tough draw against one of D-II’s best teams to open the playoffs, Pilgrim seems to have caught a break in the quarterfinals. No. 8-seeded Ponaganset upset top-seeded Barrington, 1-0, to set up a 4 p.m. matchup today at Winslow Field.
