The Pilgrim football team got some revenge this past week as it cruised past visiting Central Falls 42-6 in the Division III Super Bowl rematch during the team’s annual homecoming celebration.

Once again, the Pilgrim rushing attack led the way and picked up five touchdowns in total, further proving to be among the top backfields in the state.

Demitri Ayres scored a trio of touchdowns, including one on the opening drive, to pace the Pats. Quarterback Mike Borges as well as Cesar Pascual each rushed for scores in the win, while Borges connected with Connor Fallon for a 17-yard strike.

“We were happy from the get-go. It was our first game receiving the opening kickoff so for us to drive right down field and score was pretty awesome. It gave us the momentum, on the first play Demitri gashed a 35-yard run, it set the tone early,” said Pilgrim head coach Blake Simpson. “We moved the ball well, we’re going to keep feeding the hot hand. We can wear teams down with how well-conditioned our line is.”

The Pats were excited to finally return to their home turf and to get another crack at the defending champs.

“We had it on our minds. They beat us twice last year including in the Super Bowl so we felt like we owed them one, the kids were a little more juiced up, but they were more excited to finally play at home this year and to wear their all-black uniforms, it was a long September on the road so they were happy to be back.”

Ayres, Borges and Fallon have combined for one of the most dangerous trios in the state through the first half of the regular season. Experience has been key to their development, according to Simpson.

“They’re amazing athletes and they’re amazing kids, both in and out of the classroom. They’ve worked their butts off and those core guys have played varsity football since they were sophomores, so they have experience,” said Simpson. “That’s the biggest outcome of having some down years, they’ve seen a lot. The game has really slowed down for them and they know what they need to do to win, that’s why we rely on those guys a lot.”

Pilgrim improved to 4-0 on the season to remain perfect, and will hit the road this week when it takes on Tolman on Friday night.

The Tigers will almost certainly be aiming to slow down the Pilgrim rushing attack, so the Pats will continue to dig into their playbook to keep them guessing.

“Tolman’s defense is very athletic and its probably the best defense we’ll see this year,” said Simpson. “We’re worried about them stopping the run, but if they want to stop the run then they’ll have to put a few more guys in the box. We may have to surprise a few teams and show that we can throw the ball, too.”
