Pats roll past NK, into semis

The top-seeded Pilgrim softball team fired on all cylinders in the Division I Quarterfinals last week, cruising to a 13-0 shutout over visiting North Kingstown in five innings of work.

Cat Fallon continued to roll in the circle, allowing no runs and just two hits while racking up nine strikeouts. The Pats’ bat exploded early and often, putting up nine runs in the opening two innings of work to put the game out of reach for the Skippers.

“We (produced in all phases), we hit well, we fielded, we ran the bases and we pitched. Cat pitched well once again today, holding them to just two hits. I am really thrilled with the way that we’re hitting the ball,” said Pilgrim coach Paul Kennedy after the win.

Lily Brown led the way at the plate for the Pats, including getting a two-hit second inning and scoring two runs in the process. Fallon and Jill Ricci also added a pair of hits each as well as four combined RBI.

“To put up a couple runs in the first then come back and put up a big number in the second. It started with Lily beating out that play at first for the infield hit, then got another one in the same inning. She was a sparkplug that inning. It wasn’t anything big either, we just hit a lot of singles, but I am really happy with the way we’re hitting,” said Kennedy.

Although Pilgrim was the favorite heading into the match, Kennedy was surprised at the lopsided outcome, and expects the opposition to get tougher as the tournament rolls on.

“This was single elimination so the pressure is on … you lose this one and your successful season is over. Anything can happen, it’s nice to now be in double elimination but every step that you go, the competition gets tougher. NK is a tough team that can hit. Today they hit some hard fouls balls, they know how to hit. I was happy that we were able to shut them down, but I was a little surprised by (the final score),” said Kennedy.

The Pats will now travel to RIC to square off against Chariho in the semis. Chariho got the better of their meeting early in the season, picking up the win and dealing Pilgrim its only loss on the season.

“Chariho is a very good team that beat us earlier in the season. We’ve been playing very well as of late, but they’re a very tough team,” said Kennedy. “We’ll be ready to go on Tuesday.”
