Pats, Titans earn dramatic victories

The Pilgrim and Toll Gate boys’ lacrosse teams wasted no time getting in the win column with dramatic victories in their season openers on Monday afternoon.

Pats complete comeback

Pilgrim’s win probability didn’t look good at halftime against Ponaganset, as it trailed by a score of 6-2.

But, the Pats were able to will themselves back into the game with sturdy defensive play and an offensive outburst, outscoring the Chieftains, 7-1, over the final two quarters to secure their first victory of the season, 9-7.

Senior sniper Steve Pezzullo netted a game-high seven goals to lead the charge in the second half. Fellow senior Pat Reilly helped pace the offense, as well, burying a goal to go with three assists.

Kyle St. Jean contributed the other goal, while Jordan Hudson grabbed his first point on the young season with an assist.

Pilgrim will look to move to 2-0 when it hosts Scituate at Bend Street Athletic Complex today at 4 p.m.

Dean clutch late

Sophomore attack Jack Dean scored a shorthanded goal with just eight seconds remaining to break a stalemate and give Toll Gate an 8-7 victory over Tiverton on Monday.

Dean, Kyle Palumbo and Ezra Cox potted two goals apiece to help withstand a seven-point effort from Tiverton senior attack Greg Johanning.

The Titans will also be back in action this evening. They will look to continue their winnings ways at Smithfield at 6:30 p.m.
