Planning her retirement

Park School students had lots of suggestions as to how school secretary Christine Heffernan should spend her retirement. Suggestions, which were all put into a book, included sitting on the beach, getting a pet, learning a language, going to Mars, learning to surf, going to Disney World and, of course, coming back to the school to visit everyone. Heffernan has worked 28 years in Warwick schools, the last 18 at Park. “I love the job and the kids,” she said. “It’s a family, everyone is supportive of each other … we have been through so many things together.” Second grade teacher Mary Mason planned the surprise assembly Friday, along with presentations to Heffernan. With teacher Liz Nawrocki holding the book of suggestions, Victoria Oliveira reads as Joe LeBelle waits his turn. Heffernan said she didn’t think she would get a pet or go surfing in her retirement. Traveling sounds good, although Mars was a bit of a long trip. (Warwick Beacon photos)
