VANDALISM

On Sept. 18 at approximately 8:33 a.m., Officer Rose Michel was dispatched to the Sheraton Hotel on Post Road for a malicious damage report.

At the scene the officer spoke with the reporting party who stated his vehicle was parked on the side of the building when he discovered the rear driver’s side windows were smashed and the read driver’s side door was damaged. The victim stated that he parked and locked his vehicle on Sept. 17 around 11:30 p.m. There was no surveillance footage available for the incident. The report was forwarded to detectives for review.

LARCENY

Officer Rose Michel responded to the Jefferson Park Road Courtyard Marriott on July 18 around 9 a.m. for a larceny from a motor vehicle report.

At the hotel she met with the victim, who told her that his vehicle was broken into some time between 7 p.m. the previous day and 8:30 that morning. He said a bag containing a Cannon Rebel camera and two lenses, with a combined value of about $2,000, was taken. His side window had been smashed during the incident. Detectives were provided with the officer’s report for review.

SHOPLIFTING

While on patrol on Sept. 18 around 4 p.m., Officer Walter Larson was dispatched to the Bald Hill Road Macy’s in reference to a shoplifter in custody.

At the store the officer met with a member of the store’s loss prevention team who advised that earlier that day a subject, later identified as Kevin Tanguay, 49, last known address of the Emmanuel House Shelter in Providence, entered the store and headed to the men’s department where he selected multiple items. He was then observed walking to a fitting room with 10 items, where it is believed he then concealed the merchandise in a black shopping bag. He then exited the room, passed all points of sale without paying, and exited the store.

Outside, security approached Tanguay and asked him to return to the store, which he did. Once inside, loss prevention recovered $415.90 worth of merchandise, including a Tommy Hilfiger top, which was damaged when Tanguay allegedly removed the sensor.

A background check revealed Tanguay had two superior court full bench warrants for failure to appear on a sentencing violation. It was also determined that he is a bail violator as well as a probation violator He was then placed into handcuffs and transported to police headquarters. He was then charged with one count of felony shoplifting and one count of habitual offender shoplifting.

SCRATCHED VEHICLE

On Sept. 20 at approximately 7:52 p.m., Officer Thomas Greene was dispatched to the Healthtrax Wellness and Fitness on Post Road for a damaged vehicle report.

At the scene he met with the complainant, who provided a written statement. He said that around 6:45 p.m. he went to the Healthtrax to work out. After exiting the facility he observed numerous scratches on his vehicle. He initially believed that the scratches were silly string but later realized the car was damaged. The man told the officer he was unaware of anyone that would do this to his vehicle and that he did not have any issues with anyone.

The damage was located along the passenger’s side of the car about four feet off of the ground. There were wavy scratches alongside that were several feet in length, consistent with damaged caused by keys or another sharp object.

Officer Greene then responded to the Chelo’s nearby, as two cameras seemed to be pointed in the direction of the vandalized car. Upon closer review of the footage, the cameras did not capture the incident. At this time there are no suspects, and the case was forwarded to detectives for review.

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

While on patrol on Sept. 21 around 8:24, Officer Walter Larson along with several members of the department were dispatched to the Hilton Garden Inn at the intersection of Thurber Street and Jefferson Boulevard in reference to a two car motor vehicle accident with a driver who was possibly intoxicated.

At the scene officers spoke with the operator of a white Ford Ranger, later identified as Jeffrey Dorsey, 28, of 1 Mcteers Court in West Warwick. He told officers that he was the sole occupant in the vehicle, and that he was traveling south on Jefferson Boulevard when he rear ended the vehicle in front of him. He believed that the car was parked on the roadway but was in fact stopped at the red light.

The driver who was rear-ended and a witness to the accident both confirmed that the car was stopped at the light when struck.

As officers spoke with Dorsey, they reportedly detected the smell of alcohol coming from his person and breath. Officers noted that he had heavily slurred speech, a blotchy red face, bloodshot eyes and dilated pupils. He was also unsteady on his feet and was swaying from side to side. Officers reported that he was at first confrontational but later relaxed and spoke respectfully to officers.

The airbags of his Ranger had deployed, but Dorsey refused a rescue service. His truck had heavy front-end damage. Officers looked inside the truck and found multiple empty beer cans and unopened beers on the passenger side seat. Officer Larson then asked if Dorsey would take a standardized sobriety test, which he respectfully refused.

Dorsey was then asked to place his hands behind his back and was handcuffed. He was then placed in a cruiser and taken to police headquarters for further investigation. At the station he was read his rights and afforded the opportunity to make a confidential phone call. At the end of his two calls, he was seated next to a breathalyzer machine. Officer Larson asked Dorsey if he would take the chemical test, which he refused. He was then turned over to the jailer for processing.

Dorsey was issued a summons for the charges of driving under the influence first offense, refusal to submit to a chemical test, intervals between vehicles and no insurance. He was later released to the custody of a sober adult.
