DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

On June 22 at approximately 11:58 p.m. Officer Aaron Steere was driving on I-95 when he saw a vehicle driving erratically. He followed the vehicle and the driver turned its blinker on to take the exit then swerved back onto the highway, until eventually exiting onto Centerville Road, where the officer conducted a traffic stop.

The drive was identified as Peony Moore, 37, of 35 Tanglewood ER Apt. #6 in West Warwick. The officer detected a strong alcoholic odor coming from Moore’s breath and saw she had bloodshot eyes, a slumped body posture and appeared to be in a confused state. Moore could not locate her license or an ID. When the officer asked her to exit the vehicle multiple times, Moore kept refusing to get out.

He tried opening the door and Moore continued to refuse to get out, shutting the door on him. He feared she would attempt to drive off, and he requested assistance from other officers. Eventually, they were able to get Moore’s hands off the steering wheel and place her into handcuffs, putting her in the back of one of their patrol cars.

Moore was transported to police headquarters, where she wouldn’t answer any of their questions and refused, through non-compliance, to take a chemical test.

Moore was placed in a cell and charged with DUI/Drugs/Alcohol 1st Offense – B.A.C. Unknown. She was also charged with Refusal to Submit to Chemical Test and Laned Roadway Violations. She was given court summons and released to a sober adult.

POSSESSION

On June 19 at approximately 11:06 a.m. Officer Matthew Moretti was driving on Elmwood Avenue when he saw a 2004 Mazda operating with two brake lights out, and he conducted a traffic stop.

The driver was identified as Darith Roeun, 26, of 89 Waverly St. in Providence. The officer smelled marijuana coming from the car and saw a marijuana roach in the side pocket of the driver’s door. Roeun did not have his license on him, and system checks showed that he had an expired license.

A search was done of Roeun and his car, which found a pill bottle of Adderall in his pocket, which he said was prescribed to him. He could not, however, say who the prescribing doctor was or where/when he got it. Reoun was placed into handcuffs and put into the back of a police cruiser that had come for backup.

During the vehicle search, several marijuana roaches were found. Reoun told the officer that he was nervous, apologized to him, and said he lied about where he got the Adderall from.

The vehicle was released to a licensed operator and Roeun was taken to police headquarters, where he was charged with one count of Possession of Schedule I, II, III, IV, V and given a citation for Driving on Expired License.

PROPERTY DAMAGE

On June 28 at approximately 10:37 a.m. Officer Rose Michel responded to the report of malicious damage at the Sheraton Hotel on Post Road.

The reporting party said that sometime between June 22 and June 27 the hotel’s transportation van was broken into and the ignition system was tampered with. He said the vehicle had been locked on June 22 and was unlocked on June 27. No forced entry was observed, and there was no surveillance footage available.

SHOPLIFTING

On June 19 at approximately 10:43 a.m. Officer Christian Vargas responded to the J.C. Penney at the Warwick Mall for the report of a shoplifting that had just occurred.

The loss prevention associate said that she saw a male in his thirties enter the Sephora Department of the store and conceal a $79 bottle of cologne in his shirt before leaving the store without paying. She saw him enter a white Infiniti sedan, which she didn’t get the license plate for, and leave the area.

The store wished to press charges and video surveillance was placed into evidence. The case was forwarded to detectives.

On June 20 at approximately 4:30 p.m. Officer Kyle Fitzsimmons responded to the Walmart at the Rhode Island Mall for the report of a shoplifter in custody.

The shoplifter was identified as Aggie Reels, 40, of 45 Wesleyan Ave. Apt. #1 in Providence. The asset protection associate, who had Reels in custody, said Reels had taken assorted merchandise and went through the self-checkout area but did not scan all of her items. She had tried shoplifting $163.51 worth of merchandise.

The store wished to press charges against Reels and trespass her from the store. Reels was taken to police headquarters, where she was charged with shoplifting – misdemeanor – and released on a court summons.

On June 28 at approximately 9:09 a.m. Officer Sokphannareth Chea responded to the Target at the Warwick Mall for the report of a male shoplifter in custody.

The loss prevention employee said that he saw the male, later identified as Carlton Purdy, 45, of 41 Home Ave. in Providence, concealing a number of items in his clothes before trying to exit the building.

Purdy, who the loss prevention employee recognized because of previous shoplifting incidents, was taken into custody without incident. He had tried taking $79.98 worth of merchandise from the store.

Purdy was taken to police headquarters, where he was held as a probation violator. He was charged with one count of Shoplifting-Misdemeanor and one count of Misdemeanor Shoplifting Habitual Offender.
