DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

On July 28 at approximately 1:10 a.m. Officer Jonathan Byrne was driving by the traffic light on Elmwood Avenue at Post Road when he saw a blue Acura stopped at a green light with multiple males knocking on its windows.

He stopped behind the car and one of the males came over to tell him there was someone passed out in the driver’s seat and they were trying to wake him up. As the officer approached the vehicle, the driver woke up and appeared confused about what was happening.

The driver was identified as Jan Hilfer, 32, of 444 Meshanticut Valley Pkwy., Apt #50 in Cranston. The officer detected alcohol on Hilfer’s breath as he was talking to him and Hilfer said he had been drinking earlier that night. The officer cancelled the rescue that had been called by the other males and conducted a series of field sobriety tests on Hilfer.

During those tests, the officer determined that Hilfer was driving under the influence and placed him under arrest, then transported him to police headquarters.

At the station, Hilfer refused to take a breathalyzer test.

Hilfer was then charged with DUI/Drugs/Alcohol (1st Offense) – B.A.C. Unknown as well as Refusal to Submit to Chemical Test and Stopping on Traveled Portion of Open Highway Prohibited. He was given court dates for the offenses, his car was towed from the scene, and he was released to a sober adult.

LARCENY

On July 31 at approximately 3:10 a.m. Officer Keri-Ann Leighton responded to the Newport Creamery on Warwick Ave. about a stolen bicycle.

The victim said he works for the cleaning crew overnight and had left his blue mongoose mountain bike, valued at $200, outside. He said it was not locked.

The Officer later found that video surveillance did not capture the incident. The victim did not have the serial number for the bicycle.

OBSTRUCTION

On July 28 at approximately 7:49 p.m. Officer Jill Marshall initiated a traffic stop on Lambert Lind Hwy. The driver of the vehicle was later identified as Christian Longtine, 22, of 1044 Main St. Apt. #1 in West Warwick, but Officer Marshall said a female passenger had switched with him after they were pulled over. The driver had pulled into the Warwick Mall parking lot.

Longtine would not provide the officers with any type of identification, and continuously refused to tell them his name and date of birth. He was placed in handcuffs and taken to a police cruiser, where he again refused to provide his name and date of birth.

He was taken to the police station, where he continued refusing to identify himself, until eventually Longtine told them his name, which was confirmed in the system. A RILETS check was also done on Longtine and showed that his Massachusetts license was suspended.

It also showed that he had an active warrant out for driving with a suspended license, and he said he didn’t want to identify himself because he was aware of that warrant.

Longtine was charged with Obstructing Officer in Execution of Duty and Driving with a Suspended License (2nd Offense). Longtine was held as a probation violator at Warwick Police headquarters until the next session of court.

POSSESSION WITH INTENT TO SELL

On July 29 at approximately 5:52 p.m. Officer David Boardman conducted a traffic (speeding) stop of a Honda Accord in the area of the National Guard building on Airport Road.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Joaquin Fabian, 21, of 106 Dante St. Apt. #2 in Providence. The officer detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, and Fabian told him that he had two small baggies of marijuana in the car, which he showed. He said he did not have a medical marijuana card.

Fabian and his vehicle were both searched, and the officers (backup had showed up to help) found two more baggies of marijuana, as well as $256 in cash. There was also a THC vapor pen with two cartridges and four more larger bags of marijuana in the trunk, each at one ounce each.

It was determined that Fabian intended on selling the bags, because they were separated into the same quantities and packaged the same way.

The total amount of marijuana Fabian had in the car was 113 grams, or around four ounces. The approximate value of all the marijuana was $800, and the value of the pen/cartridges was $100. All of that was placed into evidence and the money was seized. He was issued a citation for speeding.

Fabian was then charged with one count of Manufacturing/Possession/With Intent to Deliver/ 5 Kilo Marijuana, which is a felony.

PROPERTY DAMAGE

On July 30 at approximately 1:26 a.m. Officer Keri-Ann Leighton got a report of suspicious activity in the area of North Pearson Drive off of Fair St.

The reporting party said that two males were trying to break into vehicles in that area. He said the driver’s side window of his car, which was parked in his driveway, had been smashed but nothing was taken. He said he’d like to press charges if the suspects were found. Multiple officers were dispatched to the area to search for the suspects.

SHOPLIFTING

On July 28 at approximately 8:13 p.m. Officer Michael Bailey responded to the report of a shoplifter in custody at the Macy’s in Warwick Mall.

The loss prevention officer said that the female shoplifter, identified as Lucelana Gomes, 40, of 43 Hancock St. Apt. #3 in Dorchester, MA, had tried taking 15 items of clothing, valued totally at $769.57, from the store.

She said that Gomes and three other individuals, who were not identified, had taken several tops and dresses and went into the fitting rooms, where they removed the hangers and tickets from them. Gomes then left the area with a variety of clothing, including swim wear, without paying.

Gomes was issued a court summons for Shoplifting-Misdemeanor as well as a No Trespass order from the store, and was released from custody.
