The vehicle, a 2017 BMW, had left the gas station and the officer saw it going 13 MPH over the speed limit as well as driving in an unsafe manner down the road.

After the officer pulled the car over, the driver was identified as Altino Estrela, 54, of 22 Earl St. in West Warwick.  While speaking with Estrela, the officer smelt a strong alcoholic odor and observed the driver to have bloodshot eyes and slurred speech.  Estrela told him he had had a few drinks that night and was coming from Narragansett.

When the officer tried putting him in handcuffs, Estrela became combative and tried to pull his arms away.

Estrela also told the officers he had smoked marijuana that night, and he had a medical marijuana card in his cell phone case.

At police headquarters, Estrela continued swearing at the officers and told them he didn’t know why he was there. He also refused to take a B.A.C. test.
