Driving under the influence

On Oct. 6 at approximately 1:56 a.m. Officer Sara Goes was on patrol on Warwick Ave. when she saw a white Volkswagen swerving between lanes and even crossing over to the opposite lanes at times.

She pulled the car over on Warwick Ave. and identified the driver as Cheryl Cirillo, 60, of 9 Burr St. in Cranston.  The officer said Cirillo was having trouble making eye contact and appeared to be shaky and nervous.  She also had bloodshot eyes and when asked for her license she gave a business card by accident.

A passenger in the backseat was speaking for Cirillo while she refused to make eye contact with the officer, until eventually she said she was coming from her friend’s boat at Oakland Beach and heading home to Cranston.  She was slurring her words, according to the officer, and she told the officer that she had a couple of drinks that night.

After having to ask three times for Cirillo to exit the vehicle, she did and, though unsteady on her feet, agreed to a series of field sobriety tests.  During the eye test, the officer observed all clues indicating impairment.  She also smelt alcohol on Cirillo’s breath.  Cirillo then refused to take part in any additional sobriety tests.

Cirillo was placed in handcuffs and taken to police headquarters, where she refused to take a chemical B.A.C. test.  She also told the officer that she had four vodka tonics and had started drinking around 10:00 p.m. earlier that night.

Cirillo was charged with DUI/Drugs/Alcohol (1st Offense) – B.A.C. Unknown.  She was also charged with Refusal to Submit to Chemical Test.  She was given court summons and picked up by a sober adult.

On Oct. 7 at approximately 9:54 p.m. Officer Gregory Johnson was on post on West Shore Rd. when he saw a black Honda going around 50 m.p.h.  He followed the car to pull it over and it eventually pulled into the Walgreens parking lot at Hoxsie Four Corners, where the driver got out of the car.

The officer made contact with the driver, later identified as Robert Easton, 59, of 14 Parkside Circle in Cranston.  Easton told the officer that his car was overheating, which is why he got out of it.

The officer asked for his paperwork, and Easton fumbled trying to get it.  The officer also said his speech was slurred, his face flushed, eyes bloodshot and watery, and he had an odor of alcohol coming from his breath.  Easton first said he hadn’t been drinking that night but when pressed did say he had consumed alcohol that night.

Easton agreed to a series of field sobriety tests, during which the officer observed nearly all clues indicating that Easton was impaired.  A back injury Easton complained about caused the officer to do the alphabet test and the countdown from 100 to 1 instead.  Easton couldn’t finish either.

Easton was placed under arrest and taken to police headquarters, where he agreed to take chemical B.A.C. tests.

Easton tested at .131 and .119 B.A.C. in the two tests he took.

Easton was charged with DUI of Liquor or Drugs (B.A.C. .131) and given a court summons.

Larceny

On Oct. 8 at approximately 12:00 a.m. Officer Justin Martin responded to the NYLO Hotel on Knight St. for the report of stolen tires and rims from a vehicle that was parked there.

The reporting party said he had parked his Infiniti in the parking lot across the street from NYLO on Oct. 7 around 11:15 p.m.  Around midnight he received a call from a friend who told him his car was sitting on cinderblocks and all four rims and tires were missing, which he went out and checked.  He then called the police.

The man valued his tires and rims at $800 for a total lost value of $3,200.  He said he’d like to press charges if a suspect was found.

An employee of NYLO said there were no surveillance cameras set up in that direction of the parking lot, and there were no witnesses or other evidence to follow up on at the time.

On Oct. 10 at approximately 1:08 p.m. Officer Jeremy Smith responded to the report of a stolen boat in the area of Arnold’s Neck Dr.

The reporting party said he had parked his boat on a dirt road around 8:30 p.m. that night and left.  When he came back around 1:00 a.m., it wasn’t there and there were fresh tire tracks on the road where it was left.

He called all his friends who would have had access to the boat and none of them had it.  He had the keys for the boat on him.

The boat was valued at approximately $13,000.  The report was forward to detectives.

On Oct. 2 at approximately 3:26 p.m. Officer Derek Mourato responded to the report of larceny from a motor vehicle parked at the Savers on Universal Blvd.

The reporting party said she had parked her car in the lot around 1:00 p.m. and when she returned to it around 2:30 p.m. she noticed that her glove compartment was open and items had been stolen from her vehicle.

The items stolen included miscellaneous tools valued between $500 and $600, a Garmin GPS valued at $300, and a book valued at $100.  The thief also took her registration and insurance card.

The surroundings stores said that their video surveillance did not cover where the victim’s car was parked.

The report was forwarded to detectives.

Property damage

On Oct. 9 at approximately 12:30 a.m. Officer Jonathan Byrne responded to the area of Underwood Ave. for the report of a vandalism that had occurred earlier in the night.

The reporting party said that sometime in the night the back windshield of her vehicle had been smashed out.  The officer observed there to be a large circular hole in the windshield, appearing to have been struck with an item, though nothing was left in the vehicle and nothing was taken from it either.

Pictures were taken from the scene and the victim was advised to contact police if she found any images from the surveillance camera or come up with any possible suspects.
