Preservation of affordable housing

To the Editor:

I’m proud to report that as a result of a number of federal programs and assistance from Rhode Island Housing, 53 apartments at Greenwood Terrace will receive much needed upgrades. Residents of this affordable housing complex will benefit from new siding, roofing, flooring, and windows. The units will be painted and new stoves will be installed. The building’s boiler will also be replaced as part of this $850,000 investment.

As a member of the Board of Commissioners for Rhode Island Housing, I advocate for continued preservation of affordable housing. With the lack of affordable housing across the city and state, we must continue to look for ways to build new affordable housing for seniors and low-income families. Just as important as investing in new developments is preserving and maintaining our existing housing assets. As I have stated at City Council meetings, investing in our infrastructure needs to be a top priority for our city. Greenwood Terrace was built in 1978. With this recent investment, another generation will be able to live in these apartments.

This project is a great example of federal, state, local, and private individuals coming together to preserve a city asset. We must continue to look for creative ways to preserve and improve our infrastructure, which in the long run will save taxpayers money. I look forward to going back to Greenwood Terrace when all the upgrades are completed to celebrate with the residents.
