The ninth-seeded Toll Gate girls’ basketball team traveled to Cumberland to take on No. 8 Blackstone Valley Prep in the preliminary round of the Division III playoffs on Friday evening. Unfortunately for the Titans, the Pride were able to secure their first Rhode Island Interscholastic League playoff victory with a 49-36 win.
Blackstone was able to race out to an eight-point lead by halftime on its home floor. The Titans were a bit more efficient at the offensive end in the second half, but the Pride were still able to outscore Toll Gate by five over the final 16 minutes, extending the lead en route to a 13-point win.
Blackstone Valley Prep senior forward Marceline Marchand made all the difference in determining the outcome of the game. She did a bit of everything, both on the offensive and defensive ends, posting a game-high 18 points and 19 rebounds, to go along with five steals and a pair of blocked shots.
Sole Miranda was the only other Blackstone Valley player in double-figures with 11 points, while Faith Ramos and Simone Barros each chipped in eight points.
Toll Gate was led by its seniors, with Christina Barry scoring a team-high 11 points and Quinn Freeman adding nine. Alex Werner contributed with six points on three made field goals, while Isabel Donnelly and Kelsey DiCarlo scored three points apiece.
The Titans’ season comes to an end after posting an 8-10 record in league play and an 8-12 overall record.
With the win, Blackstone Valley advances to the Division III quarterfinals, where it will have the tall task of opposing top-seeded Tiverton.
