A good laugh for a good cause

Cedar Hill Elementary was transformed last Thursday, May 26, as students, staff and teachers all donned big red clown noses throughout the day.

The laughter-filled day, with nasally voices, is part of a national movement, Red Nose Day, sponsored by Walgreens. Across America people donned the red nose to raise awareness for children’s poverty. The noses are available for $1 at all Walgreens stores and participants are encouraged to wear them on “Red Nose Day” to bring attention to the issue in a approachable way. All of the proceeds go to various non-profits working towards improving the lives of the world’s most vulnerable children. Partners for 2016 include The Boys and Girls Club, Covenant House, Children’s Health Fund, Feeding America, National Urban League, Save the Children, Oxfam America, Charity: Water, The Global Fund, and Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance, benefiting some of the most vulnerable and poorest children here in the U.S. and across the globe.

Over the last 25 years Red Nose Day has raised more than $1 billion for kids in need around the world.

This year nearly everyone in the school purchased a nose and Dr. Colleen Mercurio, principal of Cedar Hill Elementary said the school collectively probably donated $300.

Students wore the noses all day long, walking through the hallways, using their Chromebooks, and even when taking tests.

Tracy Peasley, a third grade teacher at the school, said, “I think this is a great idea and the kids love it. It has really brought up school morale and it’s a fun way to give back and show your support for those less fortunate.”
