Registration open for summer swim lessons

Mayor Joseph Solomon announced Monday that registration is open for summer evening swim lesson sessions, the first of which begins Monday, July 8. Three levels of classes will be offered for children age 5 to 11, and one for children aged 3 and 4.

The sessions are a continuation of similar spring sessions, which were offered for the first time in nearly 10 years and saw such a demand that additional classes were added to the original programming schedule, the Mayor said through a release.

“The popularity of the spring sessions was a very strong indication that there’s a lot of interest in and a need to continue this program,” Solomon said. “This is just another step in our work to increase recreational opportunities for residents of all ages throughout the year.”

During each class, students will practice a previously-learned skill, learn a new skill and demonstrate a component of swim safety. The last several minutes of class will be used to incorporate what students have learned into a game or fun play.

One four-week session, with lessons once per week, is offered at $20 for Warwick residents and $35 for non-residents. A two-week session, which runs daily Mondays through Thursdays for two weeks, are offered for $40 for Warwick residents and $70 for non-residents.

Classes are offered at three levels for children aged 5 through 11:

Level I

– Non swimmers

Level II

– Child can float on front and back, submerge head, blow bubbles and swim half the width of the pool.

Level III

– Child can float on front and back, submerge head, blow bubbles and swim on both front and back for the width of the pool.

Level I*

– Offered for children aged 3 and 4.

If parents/guardians are unable to determine a child’s swimming ability based on the descriptions above, they are asked to see the lifeguard on duty, who will perform a swimming assessment with the child.
