Rene Bessette, 90, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., died November 29, 2011 at Fort Pierce Health Care.
Born in Pawtucket, Rene was a resident of Port St. Lucie for 22 years, moving from Warwick. He attended and graduated from Central High School in Providence and was on the football team and wrestling team. He played semi-pro football after graduation for several years.
During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps. He was a supervisor of mechanical engineering for a manufacturing company in Rhode Island, retiring after 43 years of service.
Rene was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Port St. Lucie, where he served as Eucharistic minister and prayer minister for prayer groups. He was also a charter member of Knights of Columbus #13047 of Port St. Lucie, as well as a charter member of the American Legion Post 355. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge 2196 in Rhode Island and a charter life member of the VFW Post 12013 in Port St. Lucie.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Rita Bessette of Port St. Lucie; two daughters, Kathleen Marcantonio of Portsmouth and Maureen Davide of Coventry; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be held Dec. 31 at 8 a.m. at St. Timothy Catholic Church, Warwick.
