Rep. Ferri honored as 'Afterschool Champion'

The Afterschool Alliance recently honored Rep. Frank Ferri for his support for after-school programs.

Rep. Ferri (D-Dist. 22, Warwick) was named a State Afterschool Champion at the “Breakfast of Champions,” a gala event in Washington, D.C., featuring members of Congress and national after-school champions. Ferri has been a leader in ensuring access to summer learning and after-school programs for low-income children. He was one of 19 state champions from around the country honored at the breakfast for supporting and working on behalf of after-school programs and the children and families who benefit from quality programs. The Rhode Island Afterschool Plus Alliance (RIASPA) nominated him for the honor.

Ferri has been instrumental in securing funding for summer learning opportunities. As the chairperson of the Finance Subcommittee on Education, he advocated for funding to be included in the state budget. His work in the State House resulted in Rhode Island’s first state investment in out-of-school time activities. Ferri is also a member of RIASPA’s Summer Learning Work Group and has worked to encourage other members of the work group to champion after-school program funding to help ensure that children across the state have access to programs.

“Representative Ferri has been a tremendous advocate locally for after-school and summer programs,” said Adam Greenman, executive director of the Rhode Island Afterschool Plus Alliance. “No one has been more vocal at the State House about the importance of after-school and summer learning to the children and youth of Rhode Island, and I’m proud to work with him to improve access to after-school programs for Rhode Island’s children.”

The “Breakfast of Champions” is part of the 12th annual “Afterschool for All Challenge” sponsored by the Afterschool Alliance, which brings together hundreds of educators, parents, after-school leaders and advocates from around the country for a series of events and meetings with members of Congress.
