Retires after 25 years


Sergeant First Class Russell J. Howard, born and raised in Warwick, retired from the United State Army and Army National Guard Jan. 7 after 25 years of service. He is a 1986 graduate of Warwick Veterans Memorial High School. IN October 1986 he enlisted in the Army and reported to Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. for basic training. He then went to Ft. Hood, Texas until 1988, when he was sent to Germany for several years. He returned to serve with the 104th Transportation Unit at Ft. Deven, Mass., where he deployed to Saudi Arabia for the Gulf War. In April 1992 he transferred to the Army National Guard, serving with the 1207th Transportation Company from East Greenwich. In April 2005 he entered the 243rd Regiment at Camp Varneen, Narragansett. Howard is the son of Mary Ann Howard of Warwick and the late James Howard. He is the father of four children, Caitlyn, Colby, Kendra and Kyle Howard. He is a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service and currently resides in Warwick with his girlfriend, Laurie Capron.
