The Rhode Island Capitol Police has launched a recruitment campaign, with applications being accepted through March 31, according to Chief Joseph T. Little Jr. Interested applicants must apply through the state recruitment website at www.apply.ri.gov.

“Our goal is to attract the best possible group of candidates; one that reflects the diversity of the constituents we serve and protect,” Chief Little said. The Capitol Police is an equal opportunity employer, and women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Capitol Police Officers are responsible for protecting employees and visitors to the State Capitol and other state agencies, as well as protecting the State Capitol and other state buildings, property and grounds from a variety of hazards and crimes.

Officers operate metal detectors and x-ray machines at the entrances to the State House, as well as all courthouses and several state agencies, he said. The officers are responsible for screening employees and visitors, as well as preventing and detecting crimes and apprehending violators.

To be considered for appointment as a Capital Police Officer, the applicant also must have satisfactorily completed the Rhode Island Municipal Training Academy, or a comparable program offered by a state or municipal department. He or she also must have a valid Police Officers Commission on Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certificate.

Upon successful completion of the recruitment process, candidates will be chosen for appointment based on their final rankings in the recruitment pool. Those not immediately chosen for appointment will be placed on a reserve list for future openings. For more information, see the recruitment notice on the Capitol Police website.
