RI-CART hosting ‘Meet the Docs’ to highlight Registry

The RI Consortium of Autism Research and Treatment will host a “Meet the Docs” open house on Saturday, March 15, to introduce the community to their Registry Project and the many research projects that are being conducted in Rhode Island now and in the future.

“RI-CART is entering its second year of funding from the Simons Foundation and an important goal is ongoing communication with the public about the work the group is doing both in the lab and the community,” said Susan Baylis, RI-CART member and parent consultant to the project. “The Autism Project and other organizations are working to connect the researchers with the parents and caretakers. The ‘Meet the Docs’ event is the first of many activities and family events planned to bring the autism community together.”

Rhode Island’s front-line researchers formed RI-CART to explore how physicians, scientists, service providers, educators and parents could collaborate on a broad range of research projects. The consortium received a $1 million grant in 2013 to support the first project of creating a registry of all individuals with an autism spectrum disorder in the state.

“The registry is the first of its kind and will be an important piece to moving autism research forward,” said Joanne Quinn, executive director. “We will gather important data for research while building a greater community of support and give families and individuals with an ASD a voice for guiding policy, research and ultimately treatment.”

Dr. Beth Jerskey, project coordinator for RI-CART, said, “I’m looking forward to people dropping by to meet some of the doctors and learn more about how they can become involved with and benefit from enrolling in RI-CART.”

“Meet the Docs” will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and will be held at the Child and Family Services location at 1268 Eddy St. in Providence.
