Rhode Island Latino Arts will celebrate César Chávez Day this Thursday, March 31, at the Slater Mill Historic Site in Patucket.

Chávez visited Rhode Island in the 1970s, and the state is one of only 10 in the country that recognizes and honors Chávez on his birthday.

Chávez, a Mexican American, was a farm worker, civil rights activist, labor leader and co-founder of the National Farm Workers Association, now known as the United Farm Workers (UFW).

Rhode Island Latino Arts will host a video screening and panel discussion about “The History of the Latino Labor Movement in Rhode Island.” Panelists include local labor and Latino leaders Mario Bueno, executive director of Progreso Latino, Heiny Maldonado, executive director of Fuerza Laboral, and George Nee, president of the Rhode Island AFL-CIO.

Two bilingual guides will begin the event with a tour of the mill; Marta Martinez, executive director of Rhode Island Latino Arts will provide an introduction and Scott Malloy, professor of Labor history at the University of Rhode Island, will act as facilitator of the event.

This event is one of many hosted by Rhode Island Latino Arts and Rhode island Council for the Humanities, as part of a series, Latino Americans: 500 Years of History.

The event was made possible through the National Endowment for the Humanities as well as the American Library Association.

The event, free and open to the public from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Slater Mill Historic Site, 67 Roosevelt Ave., Pawtucket. The building is handicap accessible. For more information contact Marta Martinez at marta@rilatinoarts.org or visit the website www.cesarchavezscholarshipri.org.
