On Thanksgiving eve the amazing volunteers of the RI Pet Connection Foundation were out in full force delivering home cooked meals to the animals at several shelters throughout the state. This is the second year in a row coordinating this huge undertaking but the smiles on the animal faces were truly worth it.
The volunteers begin the process several months in advance by fundraising and asking for monetary donations from the public to help cover the cost of the enormous amount of food. The shopping list includes, chicken, yams, green beans, apples and rolls. Along with the meal comes a toy and a new blanket for every animal.
The RI Pet Connection Foundation reaches out to shelters across the state to see how many want to participate and then maps out a delivery plan. Each shelter gives the number of animals waiting to be adopted to RIPCF so that every animal receives their meal and goodies. The volunteers meet two days before delivery to cook. This year it took eight people in the kitchen to prepare the meals and gifts. They are then assigned delivery routes. This year they were able to feed more than one hundred grateful animals.
Stephanie May one of the Founders of RIPCF said, "Being a small rescue we cannot officially help every dog that needs a home but we are committed to doing what we can for them." May added, "The holidays are a good time to do this as it's a giving time of the year."
As she and Rocky Langford of RI Against Animal Abuse & Cruelty arrived at the Cranston Animal Shelter with all of the meals and toys, you could feel the excitement in the air. Hunter one of the many dogs waiting to be adopted sat so politely for his Thanksgiving meal, he even looked like he was smiling. Cranston ACO Nicole Ferrara was thrilled for the animals and said, "The dogs were so appreciative of the food and gifts they received." She went on to say, "They deserve to be happy on the holiday, too."
The RIPCF also plans to do a Christmas meal delivery this year and has begun the fundraising for their next big shopping list.
