RIPTA bus hits tree on Parkway, driver believed to have suffered medical problem

The Warwick Police responded to a report of a RIPTA bus colliding with a tree on Narragansett Parkway, in the area of Spring Green Road, at 3:17 p.m. on Monday. The Traffic Division Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the accident. The accident involved a passenger-less bus operated by 42-year-old Andy Santagata of Cedar Pond Drive in Warwick and a tree.

There were no passengers on the bus at the time of the collision. The driver was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. Investigators are interviewing witnesses. At this time, speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the collision. Investigators believe the operator of the bus may have suffered a medical problem prior to the collision and that may have been a factor.

Lt. Michael Gilbert of the Warwick Police said Tuesday that Santagata’s condition has been upgraded to stable in the intensive care unit.

Any person with information related to the collision is requested to contact the Warwick Police Department Traffic Division at 468-4293.
