Rose Zita (Paulhus) Wheeler


Rose Zita (Paulhus) Wheeler of East Providence, formerly Willow Street, Providence, died March 21, 2013, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Norman R. Wheeler.

She was born in Providence on June 13, 1930. The daughter of the late Elmer and Martha (O’Neil) Paulhus. Rose was a 1948 graduate of St. Mary Academy of the Visitation. She was Past-President of the Alumnae Association for thirty-five years. She was an Associate member of the Congregation of Notre Dame (CND) for thirty years. She was named Catholic Alumnae Woman of the year in 1982. She was the Governor of the IFCA for five years. In 1982 she received the award for outstanding and dedicated service to Catholic Education.

She was the mother of Gerald and Catherine “Cathy” Wheeler, with whom she lived, Roseanne Martineau (Paul) of Warwick, Norman Wheeler, Jr. (Maureen) of Warwick, Joseph Wheeler (Sue) of Manchester, New Hampshire, Elizabeth “Betty” Ferreira (Butch) of Warren, Edward “Ted” Wheeler of North Smithfield, Timothy Wheeler of Lincoln, John Wheeler (Karen) NPFD of North Smithfield, Det. Sgt. Michael Wheeler, PPD, of West Warwick and the late James P. Wheeler. She was the sister of Elizabeth “Betty” McLaughlin of North Kingstown, Elmer J. Paulhus of Falmouth, Massachusetts, and the late Evelyn Murphy, Martha Lavey, and Dorothy Jeffrey. She is also, survived by twenty grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and her aunt, Monica Dalton of Warwick.

Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, March 26, at 8:45 a.m. from the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Spring Green, Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Peter Church, 350 Fair Street, Warwick. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
