(Strange love story)
Paul Dano plays Calvin, a nerdy, one-hit-wonder fiction writer with writer's block. He is encouraged by his psychiatrist (Elliott Gould) to write about a girl he sees in his dreams,
His dream girl shows up in his kitchen one day, and he thinks he is hallucinating, until every one else sees her. Ruby Sparks becomes the center of his life, controlled by the words he puts on paper (with his manual typewriter, no less).
Zoe Kazan both wrote the script and plays the title character in this interesting, slow-moving allegory about controlling someone's life and molding them into your image of them. It gets a little silly in spots, and you have to go with the premise and accept the Hollywood ending, but there are enough interesting moments along the way to make it worth seeing...or waiting until it goes to DVD.
Annette Bening, Antonio Banderas, Chris Messina and Steve Coogan have supporting roles. The movie is only at Warwick Showcase. Rated R with some profanity, drugs and sex.
