Tennis Titans fall to undefeated Avengers

The Toll Gate Lady Titans were swept 7-0 by the undefeated East Greenwich Avengers on Friday afternoon at home in girls Division I tennis.

The closest contest saw Toll Gate senior Larah Rizk and sophomore Bethany Prendergast battle in the No. 1 doubles match against East Greenwich senior Nikki Kanis and junior Cate Huling, falling (6-0) (6-3).

In the No. 3 doubles match, junior Isabella Martinez and freshman Julia Mathews feuded with East Greenwich’s Callie Wehr and Annie Liu, losing (6-1) (6-1).

East Greenwich Athletic Director Chris Cobain, who was coaching the Lady Avengers for the day, thought his team was considerate of Toll Gate, who has had a rough first season since moving up from Division II.

“What I really do think is that our young ladies realize who their opponents are,” Cobain said. “So sometimes it’s more about the game, sometimes it’s more about the opponent. “But, in the end, it’s about playing with respect and respecting all tennis players on the court.”

Cobain is thrilled that his team is still unbeaten, but he knows that his girls still have a tough road ahead.

“Any time we can come and win the matches that we have is great,” Cobain said. “The reality is everyone’s a tough one and you’ve got to do your best each time. And, we’ve got a tough one coming up against La Salle, so we have to continue to work hard and prepare ourselves for the playoffs.”

The Lady Titans fall to 0-10 while East Greenwich improves to 11-0. Toll Gate played Bay View on Monday night. That score was unavailable at press time. The Lady Titans also play Westerly on Tuesday during senior night.
