The Winman Junior High School Warriors were walloped 76-20 at home by the Chariho Middle School Chargers last week in boys basketball.

The Chargers were led by Tyler Labelle and Matty Teirnan, who scored 10 points each.

Winman was guided by 8th-grade point guard, Jackson Cehelsky, who finished with eight points.

“Jackson is definitely our team leader with effort and he’s been playing on the team for a couple of years,” Warriors assistant coach Patrick Johnson said. “We look to him to be our floor general and emotional leader on the team.”

Second in scoring for Winman with five points was Marcus Sukkar.

While the score wasn’t close, the Warriors enjoy jelling together more and more each day.

“We have a young team that is looking forward to growing together,” Johnson said. “Our biggest problem is they aren’t a team yet. So every day it’s getting better and better and we have more and more fun. And we’re taking a bunch of lumps on the head until that happens.”

Chariho established an early 5-0 advantage before Winman cut the deficit to two on a corner 3-pointer from Cehelsky.

Then the Chargers took a 12-3 edge on a 7-0 eruption, which was capped by a runner from Kyle McGovern.

The Warriors put an end to that explosion when Cehelsky passed inside to Sukkar for a layup, which got Winman within seven.

Shortly after though, Chariho used a 12-0 surge to take a 24-7 lead before going into the break with a 34-10 cushion.

Chariho came out of halftime on fire as well, scoring the first three buckets of the second frame. Warriors captain Louby Sukkar stopped the spurt when he banked in a turnaround jumper and made it 40-12.

With 4:13 remaining in the contest, Winman’s Marcus Sukkar found Cehelsky for a fast-break layup, which inched Winman to 62-20.

After that, the Chargers closed the game on a 14-0 surge on their way to a 76-20 final.

With the loss, Winman fell to 0-3 on the season.

A bright spot for Winman was when Emmitt Rattey checked into the contest late in the first half and buried a shot from downtown.

“He’s a sixth grader that comes in off the bench and works hard every day,” Johnson said. “We’re truly impressed and he’s going to have a lot of success in the next couple years.”

Johnson also added that he is extremely proud of his three eighth grade captains in, Cehelsky, Louby Sukkar and Brady Maccarone.

“They’re really putting a lot of effort in,” said Johnson.
