There was no missing the roar of engines or the spray as more than 20 high-speed ocean racing boats, with a helicopter following the fleet, zoomed past Conimicut Point and headed for Providence Saturday morning. They made the return trip barely 20 minutes later. Neither the Coast Guard station at Newport nor the Warwick Harbormaster knew anything about the race or what group might have sponsored it. However, according to Merrick Leach, who was monitoring the marine radio for the group, which he believed to be a rally, made a run between Wickford, Bristol, Providence and Newport.
