Sunday afternoon’s low tide and gentle breezes made for ideal conditions for Gaspee Point residents Ray Turbitt (left) and “Swede” Johnson to do some clamming off Conimicut Point. Armed with rakes and buckets to be supported with colorful beach tubes the pair found the clamming tough. “You got to work for them,” said Swede, who had the bragging rights by the end of the excursion. Ray said he used to have more success with his feet and feeling for the quahogs, but this year the shellfish are smaller and he had to use a rake.
