Members of the Warwick Department of Public Works used their break time Monday morning to pay tribute to Richard Cole, who worked for the city for 20 years. In addition, at Sunday’s wake at Quinn Funeral Home several pieces of DPW equipment, including a grader, dump truck, front-end loader and snow plow, were parked outside the home. A snowplow followed the hearse in the procession that left Quinn, drove to Oakland Beach and then circled back to Pawtuxet Memorial Cemetery. Mathew Solitro, acting DPW director, said he approved the use of the equipment and the leave of personnel. Those participating in the funeral procession used vacation time, he said. Solitro said he could think of no better way for Cole’s co-workers to express their affection and condolences to the family. Cole’s son, Richard Jr., is a DPW supervisor. Mayor Joseph Solomon, who attended the wake, approved the display of equipment at the funeral home. He called it a “nice tribute,” adding “it was a good gesture to the community and the family.” This shot was taken at the K of C parking lot on Warwick Avenue as DPW employees waited for the funeral procession. This was a wonderful tribute to a great man, and I'm sure it made his family very proud. Thank you to Mayor Solomon, Matt Solitro, and the DPW workers for making this tribute possible. Too bad there were a couple of terrible people at the funeral who harassed the mourners and trashed the family's name all over Facebook-just shameful.

It's fantastic that the city said goodbye to one of it's own and as a taxpayer I would have no problem sending some representatives to the funeral even if they were on the clock. It's too bad a couple of classless and clueless individuals had to stoop so low and cause the family duress
