For the second straight year, and for the first time in the Academy’s history, St. Mary Academy - Bay View sophomore Isabella Heffernan of Warwick was named “Best in Fair” in the Senior Division at this year’s Rhode Island State Science and Engineering Fair. Her project, “Ending the EpiPen Epidemic: Creating an Intestinal Organoid to Understand the Immune Mechanisms Involved in a Peanut Allergy,” earned a first grant award. In addition, she won the Office of Naval Research Science Award. She will now present her project at the International Science Fair sponsored by Intel in Phoenix, Arizona on May 12-17. In total, Bay View students represented three of the top 10 overall projects in the Senior Division and one of the top 10 overall projects in the Junior Division at this year’s Science and Engineering Fair.
