There were tears for sure, just as there were smiles. But by far the smiles outshined the tears as 306 elementary students K-5 filled Hoxsie School Thursday morning.

Principal Gary McCoombs said there are two classes for each of the grades with the exception of fifth grade, where there are three classes. He couldn’t offer an explanation for the “mini boom” of fifth graders.

Students can expect a couple of new features this year, including Ready Math and Gems Net, a science program being run in collaboration with URI. Also, on Monday there will be a “response classroom” where teachers outline learning objectives and activities for the upcoming week.

McCoombs will likewise be busy learning this year. He is in the second cohort of four principals to be participating in the National Institute for School Leadership program requiring 144 hours of sessions.

“I hope to bring back a lot of knowledge,” he said.
