Toasting a wonderful life

More than 120 family and friends gathered Sunday evening at the Tri-City Elks Lodge to celebrate the life of Peter A. Mahoney Sr. who died Oct. 18. Peter was remembered for welcoming neighbors into his home and workshop, as a caring husband, father and grandfather. Before retirement, Peter worked at Brown & Sharpe for 34 years and at Toray Plastics for six years. Peter’s story of his survival of the collision of the USS Hobson DMS 26 and the USS Wasp CV 18 on April 26, 1952 that claimed the lives of 176 Hobson sailors was featured in the Beacon this April. As his wife Sharon explained Sunday, Peter was a detailed planner. Not only did he write his own obituary, but also detailed his funeral and even made plans for the gathering held Sunday down to the caterer – Dave’s Marketplace. He threw a great party – good reason for his children Philip, Patrick, Pamela and Patricia Mahoney to join in a toast Sunday.
