AT&T joined those who have sought to sustain the Warwick mentor program when the School Committee, in an effort to balance its budget, cut more than $100,000 in funding to Mentor Rhode Island. Rather than close the Warwick program, where volunteers serve as mentors to Warwick students, Mentor Rhode Island appealed to the community and, with the $10,430 presented by AT&T, has raised more than $27,000 so far. House Majority Leader Rep. K. Joseph Shekarchi, a supporter of the mentor program, thanked AT&T for being a good corporate citizen and friend. Mayor Joseph Solomon, who criticized the School Committee for the cut in mentor funding, likewise thanked AT&T and called the mentor program, “one of the best values we can ask for.” Jo Ann Schofield, president of Mentor Rhode Island, said the agency just couldn’t close the Warwick program when it lost the school funds although it is short of being fully funded. “We’re still in a gray area,” she said. WOW!

    Noble effort.

Many congratulations to the above people who gave their time and effort for the Mentor Rhode Island program. This is what the Mentor Program, and Christmas, for that matter, is all about.

    Merry Christmas everyone.
