Volunteers including Norwood students and their parents, Councilman Jeremy Rix, Rep. David Bennett, Principal John Gannon and Dan Elliott, who brought along equipment from his landscaping business, rallied in Saturday’s rain to clean up the school yard. Many of them returned Sunday to continue the job, raking leaves and clearing garden beds for plantings. Gannon removed the edging designed to retain wood chips around playground equipment where kids had tripped and broken bones. The school PTA is hopeful of getting a delivery of wood chips from the city to enhance the safety of the playground. Also, according to Stephanie Shelton of the PTA, the aim is to transform an area that is now hard-packed dirt into a field where kids could run and play kickball, which is now done on an asphalt lot. Elliott made at least two trips to the city compost station with loads of yard debris.

This was such a great success! I hope the Department of Public Works will reward everyone's efforts with a few yards of material from the mulch mountain at the dump. Despite the ominous cloud of controversy that looms over the Warwick Schools, this event reveals a silver lining - Norwood's neighborhood spirit. By offering a helping hand, we can all affect positive change in our community.
