In search of the next musical sensation

Center court at Warwick Mall didn’t need stage lights Saturday afternoon, although a group of young singers found themselves in the spotlight.

The occasion was the second preliminary round of Jeffrey Osborne’s second annual Hand Me the Mic singing competition. Open to singers ages 13 to 19, the competition seeks to discover the area’s next musical sensation. Three finalists from each of the three rounds will have the opportunity to sing for Osborne and other celebrity judges during the Hand Me the Mic finals at Twin River Casino Events Center on Sunday, July 28.

A 10th judges’ choice will sing on the semi-final round on July 20, also at Warwick Mall. Kay Kay Alexis of Nashua, New Hampshire won the inaugural Hand Me the Mic competition in 2018 and has since gone on to perform on “American Idol,” making it to the final eight and performing a duet with the lead singer of the band Train.

The Grand Prize winner will receive $10,000 and the chance to perform at the Jeffrey Osborne Celebrity Classic Gala and the possibility of auditioning for “The Voice,” “America’s Got Talent” and “American Idol.” The Hand Me the Mic Singing Competition Finals will open for the All-Star Comedy Explosion,

the kick-off to the annual Jeffrey Osborne Celebrity Classic, featuring Jeffrey Osborne and some of the biggest names in stand-up comedy.
