With 122 new pilings and the superstructure for the decking taking shape, one is able to get an idea of the size of a new Rocky Point pier. On Tuesday the crew from Pare Corporation continued with the removal of the “false work,” which supervisor on the job, Mike Boucher (pictured) explained is like a template. A crane was removing “false” pilings that were used to create the framework for the final pier. A smaller barge crane will be used for the “hook work” of hoisting the decking materials, he said. A Quincy resident, Boucher doesn’t have a long commute and as he points out a spectacular work environment, “until you get into winter and instead of great it’s good.” The new pier is basically in the same location as its storm-battered and decrepit predecessor that was removed before work on the new one started. According to the Department of Environmental Management, the entire project, including the fishing pier and the shade structure, is expected to be finished right on schedule by December 31. Construction of the pier itself will be essentially completed by mid-October. The shade structure is being fabricated and is expected to be installed in November/December. The pier will not be open/accessible until the entire construction project has been completed.
