Celebrating a neighborhood gem

A little early afternoon rain is blamed for a less than expected turnout at the second annual Sand Pond Palooza held Sunday. The sky brightened and the sun came out soon enough for the kids to take to the water as adults gathered on the beach for food, drinks and try their chances on raffle items donated by area merchants and donors to Save Sand Pond, the neighborhood organization that for more than a year has fought plans to redevelop a portion of Pond Plaza on Post Road as a 630-unit self-storage facility. The association lost its most recent battle before the Zoning Board of Review to stop a special use permit allowing the development. Alisa Richardson, president of the association, said a Superior Court appeal of the ruling is being discussed. Board member David Bouchard vowed, “We’re not about to give up,” adding that their motto is, “We have not yet begun to fight.” Richardson reported that a $1,000 grant helped make the palooza possible. She said the grant was awarded on the basis of introducing the environment to the community and that since neighbors have rallied to fight the development there’s been a heightened awareness of the pond and she is noticing increased neighborhood use. She aims to apply for another New England Grassroots Environmental Fund grant of $3,500 to make improvement to the beach.
